Welcome!
We’re glad you’ve followed us here. In the last six months we have done such blog-worthy things as visit the Louisville Mega Cavern, tour the Maker’s Mark distillery, attend a family wedding, perfect our pasty recipe and go to the zoo about six times. Wow! It’s hard to believe we’ve been back in Louisville for six months! Well, we hope to cover all these “doings” and maybe a few more in future posts. However, rather than live in the past until we get caught up let’s talk about kites!
Yesterday was almost perfect weather for kites. Autumn has come on with a vengeance so the days are suddenly quite chilly. In fact, we are just off an entire week of solid grey skies that dumped buckets and buckets of rain. Spring and Autumn is the Ohio Valley are marked by those sorts of weeks. Drizzly-to-downpouring for a solid week! Yuck! Well, that broke this past Sunday so Monday we took advantage of the first sunshine in a while.
The river was up complete with little white caps and the ground was spongy, but there was enough constant breeze under the gusts to fly our marlin kite. Whoever designed it did their job well, because that marlin loves to fly! We found a hill and stood on the top and the drafts coming up the slope from the river launched our kite perfectly. With just a little bit of work we could ride every gust and keep the fish in the air. There was even (just) enough wind to keep the mini star kite up. That’s a first!
We talked about it, and we can’t quite decide what it is about flying a kite that is so satisfying. Matt thought about how you can feel the wind and see its effect on the kite at the same time so it’s like being fully integrated into nature. Maya thought about how keeping the kite flying feels like a real accomplishment because it takes a bit of skill. We were at it for a couple hours. What fun! Then we came home and talked about getting more kites. This is getting to be a real hobby!Marlin sky marlin
